ALLIANCE MEMBER COLLABORATIONS

H-E-B and Global FoodBanking Network Host Training for Global Hunger Leaders
In March 2008, two Alliance members, the Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) and
H-E-B, a leading grocery retailer based in San Antonio Texas, hosted a five-day training on food bank development and food sourcing.  GFN and H-E-B invited food bank and business leaders from North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East to explore best practices in foodbanking.  While foodbanking has long been a front-line defense against hunger in the U.S., it is just beginning to grow internationally.  The training included visits to the state-of-the-art San Antonio Food Bank which was recognized by America’s Second Harvest as Food Bank of the Year.  Attending the events in San Antonio was a representative of the Jordanian Alliance Against Hunger (a partner of the U.S. Alliance) and leaders from South Africa who are working with GFN and another Alliance member, Joint Aid Management, to start the Forum on Food Security in South Africa and the first foodbanking network in that country.  To learn more, read the press release from the H-E-B /GFN event and the South Africa Food Bank Development Plan.

2007 Jewish and Muslim Roundtables on Hunger and Interfaith Convocation
The Alliance hosted roundtable discussions with Jewish and Muslim religious and non-profit leaders to discuss how their communities could become more active in the fight against hunger.  As a result of these roundtables, both the Jewish Council on Public Affairs and Islamic Relief joined the Alliance.  In addition, the Alliance developed a hunger advocacy packet for use during Ramadan.  Following the roundtables, the Alliance co-hosted the National Leaders’ Forum on Hunger and Poverty and Bread for the World’s second Interfaith Convocation on Hunger at the National Cathedral.  For the full story, click here.

University Students Work to “Stop Hunger Now”
As part of their ongoing efforts with Universities Fighting World Hunger, students from Auburn University and North Carolina State University packaged high protein, dehydrated meals which will be distributed by Stop Hunger Now for use in crisis-burdened areas and school feeding programs. The rice-soy mixture includes dehydrated vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The packages are easy to store and transport to countries like Haiti, Kenya, Ghana, Honduras, and many more.  In ongoing efforts to end world hunger, Stop Hunger Now's goal is to build at least one warehouse on each of the major continents, keeping a minimum of five to 10 million servings of food at each location. “got breakfast?”
In 2005, the Alliance brought together East Side Entrees, a leading supplier of nutritious food products to America's children, and Share Our Strength, a national organization that works hard to make sure no kid in America grows up hungry, to promote school breakfasts through the “got breakfast?” Foundation.  Studies have shown that classroom breakfasts raise test scores and reduce health issues. By bringing together the public, private and non-profit sectors, the Foundation is educating communities across the country on the lifelong benefits of eating nutritious meals and providing grants to school districts interested in serving classroom breakfasts.
