PRINCIPLES AND POLICIES

Alliance members believe that by coming together to foster new solutions and to urge our leaders to support policies focused on the root causes of hunger, we can make hunger history. The Alliance promotes a multi-faceted approach, including:

  • Nutrition programs for children, families and the elderly that fill stomachs and build healthy bodies and minds.
  • Education and employment programs to empower people to earn their way out of poverty and secure solid futures for themselves and their families.
  • Trade policy reform, notably in agriculture, and promotion of responsible businesses to open opportunities for many of the world’s poorest families to raise their incomes.

The Alliance to End Hunger is building the political and public will to end hunger in the United States and around the world – a problem that kills 25,000 people every day and threatens 12 million kids here in America.  By forging partnerships and creating advocates, we are getting closer to the goal of ending hunger, because hunger is one problem we can solve.

We believe:

  1. Ending hunger in the United States and worldwide is attainable in a decade.
  2. Ending hunger requires a strong public commitment and greater leadership from the U.S. government.
  3. Ending hunger is the responsibility of individuals, communities, the private sector, civil society and the government.
  4. Ending hunger means nutrition programs for vulnerable people – children, women, elderly, displaced and disabled – are a priority.
  5. Ending hunger means providing economic opportunities through education and employment for people living in poverty.
  6. Ending hunger requires market-led solutions, including reformed agriculture trade policies, economic growth and private investment that benefit people living in poverty.
  7. Ending hunger includes broad efforts to secure peace and prosperity in areas where people are struggling.

The Alliance Board of Directors has endorsed A Blueprint to End Hunger and the Millennium Declaration to End Hunger in America issued by National Anti-Hunger Organizations (NAHO) for the solutions required to ending hunger in the United States. We have also endorsed the UN Millenium Project's Hunger Task Force report on how to overcome hunger around the world.
